5 Ways to Keep Students Seated and Engaged During Morning Meeting Calendar Time

It's the beginning of the school year.  Let's do Morning Meeting, right!?  What day is it you say?... Monday of course!  Where are your students?  They are anywhere but in a chair.  Yea.. me too!  Here's how to make Morning Meeting last 30 minutes and your kids actually want to stay at the table!

1. Use motivating video choice boards to keep attention and increase motivation to sit down and stay with the group.

  •   Incorporate AAC to request "my turn", "I like/ don't like it", "turn it up/down," "watch," "more," "big (full screen)."

2. Use a digital and printable version at the same time.  Students will work hands-on with materials right in front of them while also seeing materials on an interactive smartboard screen. (Check out the Digital and Print Binder Bundle)

3. Incorporate AAC by modeling. Have students label pictures and answer questions. Find weather words, clothing, emotions, numbers, and more.

4. Flexible seating and movement-  Try ball chairs, wiggle seats, and even letting kids dance to the videos

5. Toy/fidget bins

  • Make a bin for each student, or a whole bin for students to choose from, for each group lesson. Have students use these materials to help keep them seated.  When it’s time to attend or respond, gently put your hand on the toy to set it down or back in the bin.  Immediately give it back to reinforce the engagement and response.

The individual binder as well as the digital/print version Bundle is available for purchase on this website!
