How to Teach Picture Discrimination and Increase Attention with a 3x3" Blank White Square

Seriously, it’s really a blank white square!

When using a communication book or object board:

    • Put the the picture or object on the communication board that you know the students wants to request, and a blank white 3"x3" square as a FOIL (incorrect alternative.)
    • If the student hands you the blank white square, put it back on the board, give nothing and wait 5 seconds, then prompt the correct response using hand over hand or a point.

Matching file folders or object matching:

  •  When teaching matching pictures, errorless matching is great but may lead to the student just "going through the motions" of moving the pictures from left to right and essentially showing them that they don’t even have to look to do this.
    • Make a field of 2 file folder (at first) with only one picture to match (on the left side).
    • On the right side, have the matching picture and a blank square.  Don’t put "Velcro" on the blank square.  The student will be cued to look when they realize, “Hey- this picture isn’t sticking!"
    • You can do this with objects too.  Just replace the picture with an object and have the student match next to it (on the right side).

I would love to hear your comments, and if this worked for your students!
